This exhibition shows works by Christian Günther that have been recently created. With their assemblies of motifs and themes that correspond to the perception and experience of the artist, they are images of great density. The scope is wide, ranging from ancient Greek myths to the introduction of contemporary legends, realities, and things that are charged with memories yet become active in the moment of the images’ creation. As these multi-layered pictorial events consolidate upon the deck of art, they go occasionally overboard onto the passe-partout or the frame itself. Christian Günther sounds the depths of his imagination. Unsuspected connections, his vigorous paintwork and the symbolic strength of his figures’ gestures, the mysterious expressiveness and significance of his themes, the things as well as the material itself that the artist employs— all of this works to form the poetic and emotional power of these images. In contemplating these works, one is admitted into them, entreated to discover clues that can lead to interpretations. With each detail observed, viewers proceed on a trail of exploration simultaneously within the imaginary world of the images yet with an awareness of events and perceptions in the here and now. The images offer a resonant space within themselves for such contemplation. The dense and lasting experience of viewing these artworks by Christian Günther offers us ever more to discover.

In the 1970s, Christian Günther began working on the multi-faceted, long-term project GREED, which he has continued to develop ever since. The resulting series and sequences do not coalesce into a single closed cycle; rather, they present shifting perspectives on a singular point of orientation. Its title, GREED, refers to Erich von Stroheim’s eponymous silent film classic of 1924. Even the production circumstances of the cinematic epic are worked through again and again by Günther: From the original eight-hour film, all that remains are still images and a much shorter version cut against the director’s will. Von Stroheim’s Greed is also a narrative of loss of one of the most significant works of modern art.
A paperback book of still photographs that I brought back to Christian Günther from a 1977 trip to New York marked the beginning of his engagement with this motion picture. Fascinated by the film, Günther began to transpose its central themes into the present. A cohesive work group, of washed pen and ink drawings, lithographs, watercolors, large-format gouaches, and even monumental monotypes in Günther’s distinctive wax technique, has emerged. In the exhibition GREED AGAIN at the Kunstforum Weil der Stadt, works from this cycle are presented, ranging from early to recently created pieces, all engaging discursively with the visual language of Hollywood as well as with that gravest of human vices: Greed.

Over the long course of an artist’s life, both figurative and abstract works have been and continue to be created. For this exhibition, Werner Meyer, former long-time director of the Kunsthalle Göppingen, has made selections that characterize different phases within this oeuvre. The earliest works, which date from 1979/80, seem to hint at those most recently created, such as wozu das passepartout, from 2022. A central work, New(s)Papers, from 2019, will be on view. This large-scale work consists of 63 quadratic images, with each motif containing an occurrence in paint that captures a fragment of history, memory, or current events, as seen through a peculiar temperament. They are based on information presented by the media, the images formed by it: images and information as triggers for collages and montages. In this multi-layered web of images, direct perceptions unfold into freewheeling, expansive interpretations.

The latest works by Christian Günther use pictorial signs of our pandemic present as well as those from older plague epochs (the beaked mask). Concentrating on the form an en-face-portrayal, he has created not an ostentatiously “critical” series, but a meditation on the conditions under which man shows his face nowadays.

Sie konfrontieren die Attribute der Wohlstandsgesellschaften, exzessiven Way of Life
looking behind thinking ahead
Christian Günther is a witness to time, he delivers the signs of the times.
Images—contrary positions from the end of the 1960s, early 1970s—surprisingly timeless.
They takeon the constitutive elements of consumer culture, the overmuch way of life,
and the bloody trail that violence—militaristic, racist—leaves.
Thepictures are provided with direct historical, documentary references.
These are not convenient images.
A force, rending and critical, emanates out from them.

Wer sucht findet.“
Earth out of kilter: The centrepiece of the exhibition is a tableau showing a grid of sixty square pictures. These originated singly, but they are connected. The various parts of this ensemble, which has a height of 2,60 m, use newspaper clippings, the stuff of our everyday political information. Headlines and photographs undergo a transformation through Christian Günther’s interventions. He applies gouache and lithograph chalk, he writes in new sentences and paints his own pictures over the newsprint. We get a – literally – multilayered composite picture of our contradictory world. The artist has again and again commented on the history of our times – the Kosovo war or the fall of the Berlin wall. The present urgency is obvious, from the Amazonas to the White House. Besides this there are abstract works to be seen: “To keep my thinking open”, Günther says, “I have time and again worked on nonobjective pictures, which to me are no less important than figurative themes. Seek, and you shall find.”

The exhibition “Aspro – Mavro” (“Black-White”), Volos and the southern Pelion, photographs 1974-78” testify to the painter Christian Günther’s attachment to these Greek landscapes and to the people who live there. For many decades he spent the summer months there, establishing close ties to the locals and documenting landscapes, localities and people in countless black and white photographs. The 140 photographic prints featured in the two exhibitions are historical documents shown to the public in the places of their origin. The exhibition will be shown in our studio house artwalden in autumn 2018.
